oriental rug, "sultanbad" custom altered

Check out High Country Rugs, their website features custom coloring app. If you are a fan of oriental rugs (a bit pricey) and planning on getting one, you may want to try the online rug design tool with custom coloring first. It’s Free. Some things of note:

  • Viewable in 3d (like the sample I posted)
  • Changeable floor colors and types
  • No sign up needed
  • You can pick rug from their catalog as your base design (I picked “sultanbad”)
  • Price quote will instantly be shown (No commitment to buy the rug btw). The rug I made is 725$!
  • The custom rug you made is save-able as jpeg file so you can save it, or print it.

Where is the link? Try lifting the rug and you’ll find the link. Or, find the capital “F” in this post and hit it, it will lead you there.

Dining Table & Benches At Villa Escudero

villa escudero

This is a photo post, just putting notes below…

To tell you honestly eating on the flowing river is hard physically esp while holding a toddler, wife and a camera! But eating beside the falls, feet submerged in cool water, eating all-you-can food, battling langaws,  protecting my camera – all rolled into one experience – is well worth the drive and the bucks.

The Museum tour is quite a enjoyable walkthrough. Cameras are not allowed inside though. They have a “carlos celdran act-alike” there, I forgot his name. He/she is funny and real good museum guide.

The day rate (non overnight) is around P1200. I can’t remember the exact fee, I’m not the accountant in the family.

DIY Metal Chess Pieces SEt Out From Hardware Store

industrial look chess set

Have you seen this concept before? Yes? Me too.

And, I really made an effort one time and checked out screw bolt nuts store and I failed making a chess set. It’s not as easy as it looks. Once nearby the bolts/nuts bins, it is hard to come up with the chess pieces (the knight especially) without a ready plan.

Add the fact that wholesale-thinking hardware store clerk and/or owner are not that interested on 200-peso bolts and nuts sale. And so, screw it (pun intended), the chess project is on hold.

But who knows, with this great work by Julia as an added inspiration + a little free time to swing by hardware store + a little more customer-friendly Chinese hardware store owner, I may be able to do a DIY metallic chess set someday.

These pieces are very heavy and very stable. You have to work to tip them over. Many of them make a jingling sound !! You can mix and match parts and get as creative as you want. Your hardware store may contain many more parts than mine did. Note that some of the nuts will have a fine thread. These will only thread a little bit onto the coarse threaded rod before they jam. That ‘s okay if those pieces are use for the tops, as in the bishop.

Check out our CHESS TAG for more products and info about chess & checkers.

Wood Bicycle Shelf

Sometimes the simplest things are the beautifulest ones.

Take for example this book shelf slash bicycle rack….

Inside the solid wood, it is supported by a solid square steel. If you want to show-off your bike, hang it up. Said to handle most bike frames and bar widths. The nicer thing is, even without the bike, you can still use the top shelf for books & decos.

And what if you are into biking real deep and you have trophies, bike miniatures and collector’s helmet to show off? Great, display all your biking collectibles atop the rack!

RIT Publishes New Book On Modernist Designer Alvin Lustig

New Book on Modernist Designer Alvin Lustig

From book design, to furniture, to exhibitions, to interiors—everything he (Alvin Lustig) produced had dignity and beauty, and an innate sense of responsibility.
-Massimo Vignelli, CEO of Vignelli Designs

People who judge a book by its cover would be impressed with the work of Alvin Lustig (1915-1955), who designed book jackets for notable works such as F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby (1945), D. H. Lawrence’s The Man Who Died (1947), and Tennessee William’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955).

Authors Ned Drew and Paul Sternberger reflect on Lustig’s fascinating life as a modernist designer in their new book, Purity of Aim: The Book Jacket Designs of Alvin Lustig, published by the Cary Graphic Arts Press at Rochester Institute of Technology.

According to Sternberger, associate professor of art history at Rutgers University-Newark: “Alvin Lustig lived design. The depth and breadth of his experimentation in book cover design is testimony to his desire to take design to new heights, to change not just the world of design, but the world itself.”

Purity of Aim is the fourth book in the Cary Graphic Design Archive Chapbook Series—a colorful and well-researched representation of Lustig’s book cover designs that were created primarily for New Directions Books and Noonday Press, among others.

The book also focuses on Lustig’s artistry in creating bold graphic designs for book covers, enhanced by a lifelong collaboration with James Laughlin, founder and publisher of New Directions Books. In conjunction, the authors cite many passages from these letters of correspondence between Lustig and Laughlin from the early 1940s until Lustig’s untimely death at age 40 in 1955.

Drew, who teaches at Rutgers University-Newark, says as a designer and educator, he was “amazed by how Alvin Lustig’s work offers invaluable lessons about the past, while at the same time inspiring today’s designer with concrete examples of rigorous and innovative problem-solving.”

Purity of Aim: The Book Jacket Designs of Alvin Lustig is available for purchase online for $21.95 at http://carypress.rit.edu or by calling RIT’s Cary Graphic Arts Press at 585-475-6766.

Design A Functional Living Space, Some Furniture Buying Tips

When you’re updating your home with beautiful new furniture, think about how to best complement each room, whether it’s bookcases to organize your personal library or a TV stand that can showcase your new flat-screen TV. We all know there are plenty of furniture suppliers out there, so it’s important to know what you’re looking for before you begin your search.

To do this, it helps to understand the different types of furniture and how they can be effectively utilized in your home. There are hundreds of varieties of bedroom furniture, closet organization systems, entertainment furniture, computer furniture and office furniture to choose from, but once you know what you’re looking for, it becomes much easier to narrow the selection.

Get the help you need to turn your house into a beautiful and functional home. Follow our helpful furniture buying tips today.

Create a Comfortable Entertainment Room

As technology steadily progresses, the entertainment rooms in today’s homes are becoming more and more extravagant. TV stands now need to hold huge flat screens, DVD players, Blue Ray players, high power speakers and a wide variety of gaming systems.

Both the kind of media you have and the amount of space you’re working with directly impact your TV stand choice. If you have limited space, a corner entertainment center is a great way to free up the middle of a room. If you want to be able to put your TV and its accessories out of sight at a moment’s notice, an entertainment armoire is an excellent choice.

You can find everything – from complete home entertainment centers to basic TV stands with one or two shelves – so you need to have specific criteria in mind when purchasing this piece of furniture.

Also, if you want to keep your DVD and CD collections organized and off the floor, you’ll want to purchase some type of multimedia storage cabinet or tower. We has a variety of models in all different shapes and sizes, so it’s easy to find one that meets your needs.

Organize Your Home Office

Whether you run a business from home or simply use your office as a place to pay bills and catch up on work, your home office needs to be organized. The key piece of furniture in this room is going to be the computer desk. There are tons of models to choose from, so it’s important to know what features are most important to you.

Do you only have a laptop and wireless mouse or do you have a large computer monitor with a variety of accessories? Do you have lots of file folders, books and manuals that need to be easily accessible? Do you want to display pictures, knickknacks and other memorabilia? All these factors need to be considered as you look for a computer desk that meets your exact needs.

Everything from simple computer desks with pull-out shelves to expansive desks with hutches, glass doors and other impressive features. Determining your needs and assessing the size of the room you’re furnishing is crucial to getting the perfect computer desk.

Don’t forget to add bookcases and file cabinets as additional places for storing and displaying your office essentials. A bookshelf is a great place to arrange your favorite knickknacks and display your personal library, while file cabinets can stylishly keep your most important documents out of sight and organized.

Turn Chaos into Calm in Your Bedroom

Your bedroom should be a place where you can relax and unwind at the end of the day. It needs to be comfortable, calm and organized, and the right bedroom furniture can help you achieve that with ease. Traditional chests and dressers are a necessity for keeping your clothes in check, but one of the best organizational tools available is a bedroom armoire. These furniture pieces can be used for clothing, jewelry, accessories and more. They can also hold a TV, and because they have closeable doors you can put their contents out of sight in seconds.

If you need help keeping your walk-in closet clean, you’ll want to purchase a closet organization system. These innovative systems offer customizable ways to organize your clothing, shoes and other wardrobe essentials. You can find cabinetry, cut-to-size shelves, and adjustable clothing rods for wide spaces, narrow spaces and everything in between.

If you already have the perfect mattress and bed frame, consider making your bed a focal point of your room by finding a decorative headboard. They come in all different shapes and sizes, and some even have small shelves for storing nighttime essentials. If you’d prefer a headboard without shelves, you probably want to consider purchasing a nightstand with a pull-out drawer and some additional storage space.

Store Anything, Anywhere

Although a home office is a great place to utilize bookcases and storage cabinets, these versatile pieces of furniture have a place in every room of your home.

Whether you want to display your knickknacks as decoration or organize your belongings behind cabinet doors, storage furniture can help. Utility carts work best in the kitchen and in various hallways, while storage cabinets and bookcases are better suited for living rooms, dining rooms, dens and basements.

Storage furniture comes in all different shapes and sizes, so it’s easy to find a model to meet all your organizational needs. Say goodbye to clutter by utilizing storage furniture in every room of your home.

Careless Tweet = House Thief

A careless tweet might put your house at risk. Techno savvy akyat-bahay (burglars) can check leading twitter updates and get the dirty job done. This applies too on other social networking sites like Friendster.com (oh yeah, you still open your friendster accounts?), Multiply.com and the hot soc-site at the moment, Facebook.com. I am not a heavy user of these social sites now so I dunno who can view the status updates, the “network friends” or the general public. Once a user posted “off for a 3-day wkend getaway, whole family. bora here we come! c u erich! xoxo”, that’s an open invite for techie burglars. Networked “friends” or not.

And for personal safety too, over sharing is something to be conscious of. I follow some personalities on twitter and by their tweets, followers can easily track where they are. That’s potentially dangerous especially for media people. I follow one media personality and she’s into lifestyle & home niche and she’s like on twitter, 31. 31, get it? 24/7.

(I’m just kidding, I watched a re-run of 2 Men & Half and I found that “31″ joke funny.)

Anyways, like now I know where she is and I know what she’s doing… checkin… checkin… oh there, she got her nails done! This tech behavior or internet habit we have now (tweeting & blogging), I must admit, is quite addicting so a little pigil and disciple are needed too for our safety. Even us, we have pulled out some over personal blog posts in the past.

Read something about internet over sharing here.

La-Z-Boy.Com Introduces 3D Room Planner Tool To Visualize And Share PhotoRealistic Designs, Furniture

3D Room planner by La-Z-boy

Walking into the furniture showroom, Mecky Lang of Rochester, Ill., saw them — the perfect sofa and loveseat. At the store she carefully considered the color, the comfort, the configuration. She measured the proper dimensions and mentally compared to her room size. Everything fit perfectly in Mecky’s mind. Problem is, the furniture just didn’t fit in Mecky’s house. Once she saw the furniture in the living room, she realized it made the room look tiny — a big problem and a costly mistake. Back to the drawing board. Now Mecky can start with a tool that will help her troubleshoot design problems before they start.

An industry-first, the new La-Z-Boy 3D Room Planner creates nearly photorealistic 3D renderings of consumers’ rooms by inserting features like windows, doors, fireplaces and flooring along with the many styles and fabrics that La-Z-Boy has to offer, all in an easy-to-use platform. Once created, these visual reality images can be shared on Facebook or through e-mail with friends, family and design experts for feedback and discussion before any purchases are made.

In addition to helping consumers, the 3D Room Planner also is an ideal application for stylists and interior designers. Paige Hemmis, designer/contractor for ABC’s “Extreme Home Makeover: Home Edition,” agrees: “Using a tool like 3D Room Planner is a great and easy way for people to see how furniture and accessories will look in the finished room, before making the purchase. The planner quickly eliminates any hesitation that may come with taking design risks. The tool definitely helped me when I was designing the living room in my new home.”

La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries(R) In-Home Designers, a free service for La-Z-Boy customers, use the 3D Room Planner to help consumers visualize their soon-to-be transformed spaces — complete with their professional selection of furniture and fabric pairings, as well as the tables, lamps and accessories that really bring the room to life.

Plan Rooms, Picture Furniture From the first time furniture-buyer to the advanced designer, 3D Room Planner is easy-to-use:

  • Start by selecting your room dimensions and adding customizable features such as windows, doors and fireplaces to depict the most accurate layout possible that resembles your room.
  • Next, add flooring options and paint walls creating an even more customized space.
  • From there, a wide variety of La-Z-Boy furniture styles and fabrics are available and can be easily placed into the room and arranged with the drag-and-drop tool.
  • To complete the true-to-life room, choose lighting fixtures — and the appropriate lighting ambiance. Press a button to actually recline the furniture where applicable, to make sure the furniture fits when reclined.
  • Select and arrange end tables and accents.Save assembled rooms to the site or share through Facebook so friends can comment and give their advice and opinions

“Customers will appreciate the new 3D Room Planner because it actually visualizes how things will look before even making a furniture purchase, allowing people to bring their dream rooms to life in 3D,” said Matt Targett, director of interactive marketing for La-Z-Boy. “The tool also will help design experts create and visually present plans that match a customer’s space and style needs.”

La-Z-Boy will be the first in the furniture industry to offer this cutting-edge design technology to consumers. The tool was created in partnership with 20-20 Icovia, an online room planning solution for retailers, manufacturers, interior designers and homeowners. The tool is located at www.lzb3D.com and also found on the company’s Facebook page.

“The last time I bought furniture, I tried to mentally picture how it would look in my room, but I underestimated the size and cost myself money. Even worse, I spent years putting up with furniture I didn’t love,” said Lang. “It is a huge benefit to be able to see how furniture will look in my room before I commit to it.”

Sony Bravia, A Tempting Deal For You And For Me

sony bravia flat tv

Received this email offer from Citibank, a “Lighter than Paylite” offer.

If you have Citibank credit card and with some 16,000 accumulated points, you may want to look at this Sony Bravia BX300 32 inches LCD TV.

The deal is P27999 which can be had via 16000 points +2099 monthly payment. Considering when we got a Sony flat LCD (with DVD and home theater speaker system) 2 years ago, set us back almost 50,000 pesos.

After 2 years, price is down almost to half.

This is nice deal (good brand, affordable zero % monthly) if you want to replace your big bulky CRT TV in your living room or if you want to replace (or want a new) your bedroom television or kitchen TV.

Sony Bravia BX300

Tempting. (But Christmas is near, there may be sweeter deals in the coming months.)

If I ask my wife if we can this TV via our card, will I get a flat TV or a flat NO!

BTW, our TV rack console here.

Manila F.A.M.E. International Turns On The Green Light This October

Raw materials. Innovation. Craftsmanship.

As the green campaign fever continues to be a global phenomenon, on its 52nd edition, Manila F.A.M.E. International, Asia’s Boutique Show, turns on the green light as it embraces sustainability by tapping all the unique and indigenous raw materials found in the Philippines.

Bringing top of the line designs and quality home and fashion pieces for over the past two decades, Manila F.A.M.E. International is once again geared up to showcase the country’s design flair and make it more exciting by using eco-friendly and sustainable materials such as rattan, abaca, sinamay, pineapple and even durian fibers. These raw materials are ingeniously transformed into artistic creations as in past editions’ where manufacturers creatively used corrugated boards, empty water bottles, eggshells, egg cartons and cow shanks fashioned into functional and innovative home accent pieces.

Apart from the existing raw materials, recyclable materials like newspapers, glass and scrap metals are also being turned into fine furniture, unique home accents and chic fashion and holiday décor making Manila F.A.M.E. International a hive of all things creative and innovative.

For 27 years now, Manila F.A.M.E. International has included the Merchandise Consultancy Program (MDCP) to help companies and designers in developing new and better products for the discerning world market. As an essential platform for product development and innovation for the show’s exhibitors, the MDCP provides local manufacturers from the home furnishings sector the opportunity to collaborate with top-rated local and, in certain cases, foreign design professionals.

“[The consultancy program] helps widen our design perspective with the use of local, indigenous materials,” testifies Gideon Robles, President of Robles Heritage, Inc., a manufacturer of capiz and stained glass home furnishings. “Through the MDCP, we hope to bring the quality of our designs to a higher level,” says Edwin Rivera, General Manager of Obra Cebuana, an exhibitor who joined the program.

Through Manila F.A.M.E. International’s MDCP, international design luminaries like Philip Cutler (Father of Philippine Furniture), Paolo Navone (Europe’s Millenium Designer), Fred Palatinus, Detlef Klatt, Gerald Tyler, and Naomi Filmer and Filipino designers Budji Layug, Tes Pasola, Al Caronan, Carlo Tanseco, Inno Sotto, PJ Arañador, among others, have contributed their invaluable creative talents with various Philippine companies/exporters.

This year, as this edition does its share to give back to mother nature what she generously supplies, Manila F.A.M.E. International taps Wataru Sakuma to be one of the three MDCP Consultants for the show. A young Japanese designer with a strong background in the fine arts, Sakuma experiments with recycled materials such as carton boxes turned into pulp and transform them into fine sculpture pieces.

Sakuma is currently based in the Philippines and is working as a designer for Masa Ecological Development, Inc., a company manufacturing lamps, wall art, and tapestry using handmade paper. His constant research led him to pineapple and banana fibers, which he says are the best materials for his handmade paper.

Sakuma claims that with the heightened level of awareness on the importance and urgency of preserving Earth, emerging trends now focus more on products that convey sustainability and use more eco-friendly materials and that one of the fast emerging trends now is nature inspired home furniture that presents a change in lifestyle and co-living with nature. He also adds that in terms of color, soft, gentle, light, elegant and healing soft tones are in. “These colors have a destressing effect and are usually associated with nature.”

Manila F.A.M.E. International, a bi-annual trade platform for home and lifestyle products, is the only trade show in the Philippines recognized by the Union des Foires Internationales, a Paris-based international association of trade fair organizers. One of the longest running trade shows in Asia, this bi-annual trade event is led by the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), an attached agency of the Department of Trade and Industry.

The show opens on 18-21 October 2010 at the World Trade Center Metro Manila and Philippine Trade Training Center in Pasay, City.

Visit Manila F.A.M.E International and discover how local manufacturers embrace the green wave for more exciting and eco-inspired design-driven pieces.

For more information, log on to www.manilafame.com, email manilafame@citem.com.ph or contact Manila F.A.M.E. Secretariat at telephone numbers (632) 833.1258/ (632) 831.1265

Loren Legarda Proposes " Green" Houses For School Teachers

Senator Loren Legarda asked government housing officials to jumpstart the mainstreaming of “green housing” by using as a model a nationwide program that will provide affordable housing to public school teachers.

“The government should take the lead in the green revolution,” Sen. Legarda, who is Vice-Chair of the Committee on Education, urged top officials of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC), National Housing Authority (NHA), Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-IBIG), and Home Guaranty Corporation (HGC) at a hearing of the Committee on SB 700 and 1203. “To show sincerity on the part of government in implementing our environmental laws, the housing projects must utilize energy-efficient housing materials and be equipped with solid waste and water recycling systems.”

Sen. Legarda also raised the possibility of requiring housing developers to commit to plant a minimum number of trees in every project as part of their undertaking before being awarded a contract to build.

“The housing projects are intended to be implemented as soon as local government units are able to provide available land and the Department of Education completes a survey on the housing needs of their teachers all over the country.

“I hope that the efforts of our housing agencies will complement those of the local government units so we can finally provide our teachers with a home of their own, however modest, as a way of giving back to them for their commitment in molding our youth,” Legarda concluded.

Furniture Aboard Cruise Liner Shout, Liner Nail US!

There are times when furniture need to be nailed (or bolted) on the floor, wall, etc. For safety and security. Like park seating or outdoor/public benches, some installations need to be fixed and nailed.

Another good example… how about nailing furniture (dining tables, seats, bed, etc.) inside cruise ships (yacht, ferries)…

Ship owners don’t want to mess up the floors and walls? Take a look a the how chaotic it was inside cruise liner after hitting a super storm north of New Zealand. Nailing ‘em furniture and drilling the floors is justifiable.

Whatever Yaya

First night of our hired yaya (nanny), we were informed by the agency that her family contacted them. The yaya needs to get back home because her youngest was confined in the hospital. We allowed her to go home and gave fare + more than a day’s work fee. A week later, she returned and she was back with vengeance and cooked pretty good ginataang (coco milk) tilapya and sinigang na baboy and did a decent job taking care of the baby and some home chores. It paid off that we supported her.

After 2 weeks and good service, this time her family phoned us. We’re told, our yaya’s hubby (a taxi driver) hit a motorcycle driver and the bike driver met the ultimate end. May he rest in piece. The husband was detained in one police HQ in Taguig Philippines. Dunno how we were able to break the story to the yaya, but we did it. How worse can it get for her? Of course we told her that she can go and attend to her problems. We gave her again her salary rounded of to the 15th of this month, we did not deduct the full agency fee that she owe us, and we gave her extra fare again.

And so whatever yaya, we are here to support you.

But please yaya, inform us on or before the 15th if you’ll be back again.

BTW, have you seen this yaya video I posted?

Pinoy Perfect Salary for Day to Day Happiness!

labing dalawang limang piso kada buwan

I read the WSJ article (The Perfect Salary for Happiness: $75,000) that says according to the survey/study, $75000 is the magic annual number. That is in the US. And, this happiness type covered by the 75k figure is the “day-to-day contentment” and not the overall “life assessment” which means broader satisfaction with one’s place in the world, life relative to others, exclusive of the more “emotional” aspect of being happy (like giving to others, feeling happy after doing something for your neighbor), effect of painful experiences, sickness, etc.

This figure is of course on the average, way of life (materialism in effect) and cost of living (complexities of modern day living) in the US, state to state and even city to city differ. The report says, “The magic income: $75,000 a year. As people earn more money, their day-to-day happiness rises. Until you hit $75,000. After that, it is just more stuff, with no gain in happiness.”

Since SWS and Pulse Asia are both busy studying which show rocks, Piolo Pascual’s Noah or GMA Richard Guttierez’ Survivor, I dunno if they have a study salary vis a vis happiness for Pinoys. Paul and John said money can’t buy them love, happiness too. Looking at it the other way, no money spells lots of trouble. And so surely money can help but it’ll will not be all that we need. I wonder what is the magic Pinoy number for an average sized family (mom & dad plus 3 kids) living in the metros. This is wild estimate, but it should hover around (60k to 75k monthly) P700,000 to P900,000 annual income/salary. Is it enough to cover house mortgage/monthly rent, car amortization, food & clothing, kids education, health care, IPAD!, etcetera?
