Olny Srmat Poelple Can Raed Tihs

This is the occasional house and building aside post…

I am really bad at spelling that I check words a lot. Did you know that I am having problems spelling ocassional, err, occassional, err, occasional!?

But did you know that, most of the time, even if I write it messed up but in a sentence and with context, you’ll still get the drift. This is not to justify my spelling mistake but more so, means you’re too smart not to get what I mean despite wrong spelling/s.

(And with the constant use of text messaging and text-speak, our brains are even better trained to decipher what is said… Cge pls try ridin blo. Eat mna me.)

Check below…

My spelling teachers named Mrs. Rosa, Mrs. Divina, Mrs. Susana, Mrs. Loreta, all will not be happy with this post. But ma’am, I am just saying that human brain is pretty good and we can tolerate a mistake here and there. Don’t ban me come reunion time in 2020! Kids, take care of your spelling!

Design Center In Turmoil

EMPLOYEES of the Product Development and Design Center of the Philippines, an attached agency of the Trade Department, have submitted a position paper to President Benigno Aquino III complaining about the agency’s alleged mismanagement by an official appointed by the previous administration.

In their letter sent on Nov. 25 and coursed through Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa, the employees claimed that executive director Myrna Sunico, appointed by then President Gloria Arroyo in March, was abusing her authority and disregarding protocol when disseminating information. Leaning House In Frisco

ok not exactly

Considering people are purposely making inverted or upside down houses, I thought leaning house is the new wave but it’s not (or better, not yet).

This one, looks like the building is leaning right but not really. It’s a trick, the photographer tilted the camera. Not the first time this has been done. See another collection here, titled… “The Streets of San Francisco but flat.” Very cool still.

Let’s try this too. Look for hilly area, there in Quezon City, it has hilly avenues (the streets with “Scout”, as in Scout Chuatoco and others) or over there in Antipolo.

15TH Festival Of Trees Benefits 1, 720 ARMM Schoolkids

The recent 15th Festival of Trees (FOT-15) has raised funds to rehabilitate and reforest one of the major sources of drinking water from the endangered rainforests of Northeastern Metro Manila and Rizal province, as the annual fund raiser highlighted efforts last year in assisting flood-prone urbanized areas in Northwestern Manila and farflung public elementary schools in Central and Western Mindanao in the Southern Philippines.

A decade and a half after the first FOT in 1996, the annual society event has raised funds to help reforest more than half of the 28,000-hectare aquifer serving Marikina City in Eastern Manila and Antipolo City in Rizal, especially in the aftermath of the Typhoon Ondoy-Ketsana tragedy last year.

The Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), the nation’s largest corporate-led social development foundation, has been the recipient of various FOT undertakings led by the Makati Garden Club (MGC), like helping raise funds for the building of drainage systems in a flood-prone housing estate in urban Malabon City after the 14th FOT in 2009.

The fund-raising festival also helped provide textbooks and chairs for at least 1,720 schoolchildren in Maguindanao province in Central Mindanao and Basilan province in the Southwestern Philippines, two of the less fortunate provinces of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

For 15 years, the ladies of the Makati Garden Club have been using their stature in society to raise millions of pesos to benefit various poverty-reduction projects of PBSP. The FOT has evolved to be the top fund-raising gala event in Manila, and to date has raised close to a hundred million pesos to support PBSP programs in Cebu Hillylands, Maqueda Bay in Samar, the Bicol region, and areas in Mindanao.

The year 2010 is also the joint Ruby anniversaries of the Makati Garden Club and PBSP, both established in 1970. The theme for FOT-15 is What a Wonderful World.

In past years, Christmas trees were decorated and auctioned off to raise money, and the auction was expanded to art works. In the last few years, prizes included premier resort accommodations to Amanpulo and overseas destinations.

In one FOT year, the art auction included masterpieces from Anita Magsaysay-Ho that attracted collectors from Singapore, and donations raised during that year funded PBSP’s Samar technology center which has developed aquaculture technology to benefit fisherfolk primarily in the Visayas.

Business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan, chair of the PBSP Board of Trustees, together with PBSP executive director Rafael C. Lopa led the 15th FOT on Tuesday evening (Nov. 23) at the Manila Polo Club along McKinley Road in Forbes Park, Makati City.

In his keynote speech, Pangilinan cited the FOT’s contribution to Project Escuelas last year which provided Muslim Mindanao schoolchildren with 1,600 textbooks and 200 chairs to help decongest crowded classrooms in at least six public schools in Lamitan, Basilan and in Datu Abdullah Sangki and Datu Paglas, Maguindanao.

Through the Project Escuelas initiative, these new chairs and textbooks have helped both teachers and students in the two ARMM provinces to improve the conduct and quality of their academic exercise in a spacious classroom now more conducive to learning.

He also pointed out that the FOT last year assisted urban poor household from a total membership of 560 housing associations in the four-hectare Maysilo estate-village in Malabon, which has been perennially affected with floods during heavy rains and rising seawater.

The FOT donated the funds which facilitated the construction of 250 linear meters of road running parallel 250 equal meters of a water drainage system to mitigate the effects of heavy flooding in this urbanized community in Sitio Rosal, Barangay Maysilo, with 115 households occupying 7,000 square meters of the 4.2-hectare Maysilo estate.

Of the 28,000 hectares in the Marikina watershed, fund raisers have aimed to cover at least 54 percent or more than half (around 15,120 hectares) of the aquifer, as the minimum required forest cover to mitigate any rainfall rampage or prevent the onslaught of another Ondoy.

But the Marikina watershed now has an estimated remaining rainforest cover of only a fifth or around 20 percent (more or less 5,600 hectares), as the FOT aims to reforest more than a third or around 34 percent (about 9,520 hectares) to complete the minimum 54-percent forest cover requirement.

The Marikina Watershed Initiative of the Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation (PDRF) began with 600 hectares, setting up community-based seedling nurseries and initial livelihood programs for the local residents and indigenous community, primarily through the adopt-a-hectare nursery package.

The watershed initiative has also helped develop an integrated watershed management plan to reforest the Marikina-Antipolo aquifer, involving an estimated 6.7 million trees and 1.3 million required annual seedlings in a reforestation target for the next five years. (PBSP)

The Day I Started To DIY

Wiki says… Do it yourself (or DIY) is a term used to describe building, modifying, or repairing of something without the aid of experts or professionals. The phrase “do it yourself” came into common usage in the 1950s in reference to home improvement projects which people might choose to complete independently.

Twenty six years ago today, my father left us to have an EB with our Creator.

And since then, with no elder brother to do the manly stuff and no father/brod whom I can learn from, I was forced to do things at an early age, alone.

As a kid, I…

  • Unclogged the drains
  • Started the car (remember boy! start with the gear on neutral!) when momma is out of town
  • Cleaned and took care of the car (or at least, I tried to)
  • Drove the car at 15, went around town for a year with student driver’s license
  • Fixed the roof holes
  • Took precautionary measures in case of incoming storm (and one time, basically held part of our roof during a great storm in the 80s)
  • Replaced a big-chuck of the kitchen sink/countertop on my own
  • Constructed all my pet housing needs, play things (wooden toy trucks – kahoy na trak trakan), basketball goals, etc.
  • Replaced leaking faucets
  • Dug a dumping pit
  • Did a lot DIY electrical stuff which resulted in main switch tripping many times over
  • Secured the house… door knob locks, barrel locks, hook & eye locks, trap doors, etc.
  • Slept with bread knife under my pillow, you know, just in case a burglar comes in the middle of the night

Two and a half decades hence, I am still at it.

Still thinking I can (or should) do it all.

Dec 2, 1984. The day I was forced to started to DIY.

RIP, my father.

Bless his soul, our Father.

Thanks for reading. Yours truly, the Managing Director — And… Part-time carpenter, forced furniture designer, stand-by CAD operator, seemingly retired web developer, sort-of copy writer, novice welder, eye-flinching internet researcher, headache-prone business owner, latex gloves equipped woodworker, beat-the-3pm-cutoff purchaser, de facto blogger, wannabe artist, no-talent-fee photographer, etc.

Japan Assits Mapping Project In Mindanao

At the Presentation Ceremony of “Mindanao 2020” (Philippines’ new development plan for Mindanao) to the President, in MalacaƱang, on November 30, 2010, His Excellency President Benigno Simeon Aquino III and Japanese Ambassador Makoto Katsura witnessed the signing of Program Agreement among the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA), the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which reaffirms Japan’s support for the Topographic Mapping Project for Peace and Development.

Under the project, NAMRIA will produce a new, digital topographic map of entire Mindanao. Since the currently-used map was made in the 1950′s, it was an urgent task for NAMRIA to update it. Under the technical assistance project of JICA, amounting to 1.3 billion yen (approximately 690 million pesos), NAMRIA is creating the topographic base maps on a scale of 1:50,000. The maps will be utilized in various occasions, such as road planning, disaster prevention, environmental management, social services and other development activities, and thus will finally contribute to the economic growth in Mindanao.

Japan has actively contributed to the peace process and development in the conflict-affected areas in Mindanao and the surrounding areas in the ARMM. Japan launched J-BIRD (Japan Bangsamoro Initiatives for Reconstruction and Development) in December 2006 to enable the people and the communities in the target areas to enjoy the “dividends of peace” through the Japanese ODA on the basis of “Human Security” principles. The Topographic Mapping Project for Peace and Development in also categorized as one of the J-BIRD projects.
