Ikea @ Amazon

Ikea products are now available on Amazon. Still dunno if they can bring down the shipping & handling of big & bulky Ikea furniture to acceptable cost. Because if the SH fee is high, buyers might just as well make a trip to Ikea showroom (and get free meatballs and interior design ideas as well) and do the shopping live.

Online furniture shopping isn't new in the US or here in the Philippines.

Even in the Philippines - Ikea or not - buyers are now embracing online furniture shopping. It's the first time that IKEA is available via Amazon, so it's news for us. For US buyers, you may want to check it out. Spend a little more time and you can find free shipping coupon. Please check our Leoque Philippines' A-Store (Amazon Store), we have an Ikea products section. We have there over 60 select IKEA products! Feel free to browse and if its economical to order online, please do so. Double check & compare Amazon prices with the main Ikea site.

Again, here is the A-Store Ikea link.

SANYO Solar Modules Provide Renewable Power To Select Ikea Stores In Canada

ikea solar

SANYO Canada Inc. (SANYO) announced today that IKEA Canada has chosen SANYO HIT® technology to generate renewable energy using the roofs of three IKEA stores in the Greater Toronto Area. The project will support the use of industry-leading conversion efficiency SANYO HIT® Power 210A solar PV modules. The SANYO rooftop PV systems at IKEA stores in Etobicoke, North York and Vaughan together will have a capacity of 750kW, which is the approximate equivalent of what is needed to power 100 average Ontario homes. IKEA Canada will be the first retailer to exclusively own, install and operate what is expected to be the largest rooftop solar panel networks in Ontario under the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program. The systems, installed by AMP Solar Group, will be completed and fully operational by the end of December 2010.

IKEA Canada launched this solar initiative at its Etobicoke store on October 7, 2010 in a ceremony attended by the Honourable Brad Duguid, Ontario Minister of Energy; and the Honourable Laurel Broten, Minister of Children and Youth Services and Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues and MPP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore.

Other project participants included the Ontario Power Authority and two major local distribution companies, Toronto Hydro and PowerStream.

“IKEA Canada is pleased to partner with SANYO for the installation of three solar networks,” says Natalia Hahn, Sustainability Manager for IKEA Canada. “SANYO’s commitment to sustainability and their development of high efficiency solar panels has been an integral part of this renewable energy program at IKEA Canada.”

IKEA’s vision of helping to create a world where people “take better care of the environment, the Earth’s resources, and each other” has found a perfect fit with SANYO’s mission “to be an indispensable element in the lives of people all over the world by delivering unique and total sustainable solutions that enhance all lifestyles and industries.”

“We are proud to have this opportunity to be part of the solution that provides clean, renewable power using SANYO HIT® PV modules,” said Koshi Terakawa, President of SANYO Canada Inc.

“For projects of this nature, we understand the importance of utilizing high-performance PV modules with proven quality and reliability from an industry leader to maximize the energy harvest,” added KC Chang, SANYO Canada’s General Manager of Solar Systems. “This is especially true for systems designed to leverage the Feed-in Tariff program in Ontario for 20 years.”

SANYO will continue to be active in communities served by IKEA and its partners to help to ensure a sustainable planet for future generations.

IKEA THANKS FANS FOR IPHONE APP DEVELOPMENT

Home furnishings company, IKEA today announced a series of new developments to their 2010 Catalogue iPhone app, following customer feedback provided at launch. IKEA has redeveloped the app over just two months, after inviting fans who had downloaded the app from the Apple iTunes Store to suggest ways the app could be improved via twitter, a phone hotline, email and on the App Store.

The latest version of the catalogue app, now features the most requested functionality, including:

  • search function enabling customers to select products using keywords
  • bookmarking, helping customers to save pages
  • contents page, a colour coded index with links to main sections

Other updates IKEA is currently investigating based on user feedback include: detailed product information on-demand, functionality to find your nearest store, information about what is in stock in your local store.

Jason Baker, IKEA UK and Ireland Marketing Project Manager said:

“We’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who downloaded, emailed, phoned and tweeted us their thoughts.  Based on the success of this initiative, and fitting with IKEA’s own philosophy, we will continue listening to our customers and developing our products in line with their feedback.”

Following on from the success of the app in the UK with over 300,000 downloads in the first month, it will now be rolled out for other countries IKEA catalogues.

Always on the lookout for practical ways to help customers with their daily routine, IKEA is still open to hearing from ways to improve the mobile version of the catalogue.

The updated IKEA Catalogue 2010 UK edition is available as a free download from the Apple iTunes Store from 8 April 2010.

Boklok Concept Housing by Ikea

look, boklok

Fun sounding name is Boklok. Pronounced, Boo Clook.

A concept housing from Ikea and some other partners. It’s an affordable housing system. Well at least, affordable to the people where it is currently marketed like Germany, UK and other well-off Euro countries.

The concept is based on customers’ real needs and wishes, a safe environment, roominess and access to green space. The state-of-the-art, Scandinavian-style timber framed properties will be primarily aimed at households earning between £15,000 and £35,000 a year and will be sold on an outright sale or shared ownership basis.

The BoKlok products are straightforward and designed to attract many people. They are full of cost efficient and smart solutions. All products have a wooden construction. Wood is the only renewable construction material. Smart design together with modern and sustainable productions methods guarantee low energy consumption.

The idea is for well-produced modern homes be available for ordinary people. Therefore, to spread the concept Boklok does franchising of the concept. But don’t expect that Boklok will be in the Philippines soon. If an Ikea furniture store franchise in the Philippines is hard to get, a housing franchise (the technology transfer, the logistics, consistency of materials sourced from the Philippines vs the Europe-quality they have there, etc.) is many times harder to get.

But other biggie developers and contractors here in the Philippines can learn from the concept. So that, more Filipinos will have the chance to own non-boxed type housing, cramped spaces, poorly-designed mass-housing in the suburbs.

More houses, er, info in here.

June Ikea Bits

Some Ikea news and sites we collected this past days:

Disguising your IKEA furniture

There is a way to avoid the shame of an IKEA living room (spoken from someone who has an IKEA chair in his living room). Online retailer Bemz specializes in creating slipcovers for IKEA furniture and carries not only basic fabrics, but patterns from design houses such as Merimekko. The only drawback is that the slip covers can cost as much as the furniture. In many cases, however, it’s still less expensive than buying high end.

This Hacked Ikea Furniture Takes Care of Its Own Feng Shui

When you consider it, we’re not so nice with our furniture. We plop our heavy selves down on some pieces and put drinks on others…sometimes without coasters. We push them around, figuratively and literally. This smart furniture, however, pushes back.

Successfully Shop at Ikea

With the opening of so many locations all over the United States, Ikea has become one of the most popular home furnishing stores in the country. Unlike many home furnishing stores, though, shopping at Ikea is often a daunting task. The stores are very large with so many options that consumers may feel lost or overwhelmed. To successfully shop at Ikea, there are a few helpful tips that will make your adventure more enjoyable.
Is IKEA furniture expensive or affordable to most people?

IKEA is said to be an international home products retailer that sells low-price products, including furniture, accessories, bathrooms and kitchens at retail stores around the world. However, for some people the price is quite expensive. What do you think?

And we have Ikea posts too, here & here.

To be updated.

Ikea Releases Results from the Playreport, A Global Survey on Child Development and Play

IKEA has just released the results of the Playreport, an international, research-driven project investigating play and its affects on family life. It is the largest global survey ever conducted on the topic.

Survey fieldwork for the report was carried out over the Internet in 25 countries by Research Now, London. Family Kids and Youth, one of the world’s foremost youth research agencies, partnered with IKEA to design the questionnaire, analyze the results and provide an overview of child development and background to the importance of play.

“The state of childhood is very good out there,” says Dr. Barbie Clarke, CEO at Family Kids and Youth and head researcher on the Playreport. She cites some surprising results, such as kids preferring 9 to 1 to play with friends and their parents over watching TV. “It’s really a healthy picture, and parents should know that they are doing a good job.”

Dr. Clarke did note, however, that some of the results are a tad worrisome:

45% of parents feel they don't have enough time to play with their
children
26% agree that they're too stressed to play with their kids
46% of parents admit to feeling guilty about not spending enough time
with their kids

“For children, play is life itself,” says Maria Elander, head of IKEA Children’s School, an integrated part of Children’s IKEA and a driving force for increased knowledge about children, their needs and development. “For us, children are the most important people in the world, and the home is the most important playground. Play is a fundamental aspect of their development. Through this global research, we’ve gathered new insights about how play is perceived by children and parents all over the world.”

To further collaboration, IKEA has launched a Playreport page on Facebook, and is inviting experts and parents from across the world to participate in a conversation around child development and the importance of play.

While working with child development experts is nothing new for IKEA, the Playreport represents an innovative approach that allows the brand to collaborate with parents and children while raising awareness about a topic that is crucial to the development of their Children’s range.
