A play between square and a circle. We call this the “SHEN”. Sort of a mini-wheel without a shaft. Rather, ’twas put on a stand. With two wooden rods/poles. It is charming. It is cheap.

Book: Furniture hot spots – The best furniture stores and websites, coast to coast

furniture hot spots

furniture hot spots

We’ll not make a review of Jennifer Litwin’s book ‘coz she didn’t include Leoque in her list! Just kidding. Her book covers only US mainland stores. “Coast to coast” says the book.

Though the book was penned 2005, it was able to incorporate the important value of having a website and not. Written by a thorough furniture shopper herself, it’s a great source of info for furniture store owners as to what customers are looking for – AND – an essential super-guide for would-be furniture buyers.

Finally, a pocket guide to buying furniture that offers no-nonsense reviews of the best shops. It’s the book Jennifer Litwin (author) needed the first time she went furniture shopping without being able to tell what type of furniture store she was about to walk into.

That was a long time ago, and Jennifer Litwin has since become one of America’s premier furniture brokers. Her book is for anyone who has ever felt intimidated by the unregulated market, and wanted a down-and-dirty guide to shopping for all kinds of furniture, all over the country.

Cut to an easy-to-carry size, and sharply focused, FURNITURE HOT SPOTS will help both first time buyers, as well as the more seasoned shopper. The core of the book tells readers where to find what they’re looking for, depending on where they are in the country, and how to determine if it’s fairly priced.
Litwin divides the nation into ten regions and provides info-packed reviews of everything from upscale urban boutiques to barn-style shops. Each seller is profiled concisely, with phone numbers and Web sites, as well as comments about the quality of the stock, the kind of items the store specializes in, and the knowledge of the sales associates. Also included is invaluable tips on how to buy at auction, the best way to navigate flea markets and chain stores of all price ranges, and great hot-spots on-line, many of which are also reviewed. This is the essential guidebook no furniture search should be without.

Yikes, missing or stolen BenCab paintings (Shipped via FedEx)

"Three Women" 2009 29.5 x 40 in Acrylic on Canvas

"Three Women" 2009 29.5 x 40 in Acrylic on Canvas

First, let me get this out of the way. I will not, ever, get a valuable artpiece and have it shipped via courier or a forwarder/logistics company. I’m sure many of you will not too.

Regarding the what-could-be stolen paintings, I’m sure it won’t be out in the market in the coming years or the culprit risks of being traced. If you happen to see these works (the BenCab collectors, the gallery owners and auctions houses, next-door neighbors), please contact the Cabreras.

Anyways, see the open letter below…

Desk Console: 3 Out, 3 Days

desk-console (250 x 250)

This is our second “drawing post” of a finished work. The first one here. This is not the trend. We are here to post real stuff! Say no to “drawing posts!” Say no to “drawing posts!” Say no to “drawing posts!”

Unfortunately, for this desk console, we’ll have to wait some weeks again to get new stocks and therefore post the real photos. The three “sample” pieces we made were bought Thursday (1), Friday (2) and last piece today, Saturday (3). As some of the store visitors would now, we don’t exactly have the biggest furniture showroom this side of earth. Our showroom stockroom is superloaded and kinda messed up right now. So we can’t take a decent photo shot of the table desks. With one piece on top on one another, posting picture of the console-desk pic won’t give justice to its sexiness.

Please check out thumbnail image no.8 on the “Flexible Spaces” post. It’s something like that. Can be used as work desk, can be a table console too.

Anyways, we’ll have this again.  We’ll reproduce and perhaps tweak some of the measurements. Back to the drawing desk, err, drawing board.

*We posted the plan to make this piece during the ancient period of November 2009. Here.

  • 85 home plans

  • No. of times I actually opened this book: 4 TIMES!

The book is more of a plan catalog of Frank Betz Associates, Inc. as further down the read, pricing of the stock home plans are published too. And, I don’t know why we have this when all of its floor plans and contents are available for preview online. Just check out http://www.flexiblespaces.com. I believe all the plans are for sale, the license to use that is. With further purchase options like additional plans, materials workbook, etc.

Unfortunately, the plans are more suited to US and not for  tropical Philippines. But at the least, you’ll get nice guide and ideas, the flexibility of the home design, timeless architecture, efficient use of space, provisions for changes as lifestyle evolves and more.

Sample pages are here. You can order online here or head to National Bookstore for a quicker on-the-spot buy.

Book: Filipino Style

filipino style

filipino style

Since buying and reading the “Tropical House” with photography by Luca Invernizzi Tettoni, we are now a Luca fan. Anything done or with Luca in it, we’ll grab it. The next time a book about banana-Q comes out with photographs by Senor Tettoni, we will buy that too!

And so we bought this awesome book last weekend… Filipino Style. Not only is this a crash course of – where the “Flipino Style” came from – what are its influences – how the Filipino style evolves – and – what the future holds, but also, it’s a book with touches of history of the Philippines and its heritage and super-rich culture.

  • The analogy with sinigang is the awesomest
  • Fabulous wood crafts, furniture, traditional Filipino interiors, etc.
  • As with other aspects of Filipino culture, church played a big role too in shaping Philippine architecture, crafts and furniture
  • Great text and photography
  • The topic of the Filipino Style, embracing modernity

Product Description

After centuries of absorbing international influences, the Philippines’ architecture draws upon the Americas, Europe and Southeast Asia to create a style all its own. Adjusting these ideas to a tropical environment,Filipino designers have created a bold esthetic. Filipino Style gives an overview of the traditional Filipino house, the influence of foreign cultures, the environment’s importance to home design, and finally the embrace of modernity. Insightful and beautifully photographed,Filipino Style provides wonderful design ideas from this lush island archipelago.

About the Author

  • Rene Javellana is an author art art historian at Ateneo University in the Philippines.
  • Fernando Nakpil Zialcita is a professor of Anthropology at Ateneo University.
  • Luca Invernizzi Tettoni photographed the Thai Spa Book for Periplus Editions.
