Design Center In Turmoil

EMPLOYEES of the Product Development and Design Center of the Philippines, an attached agency of the Trade Department, have submitted a position paper to President Benigno Aquino III complaining about the agency’s alleged mismanagement by an official appointed by the previous administration.

In their letter sent on Nov. 25 and coursed through Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa, the employees claimed that executive director Myrna Sunico, appointed by then President Gloria Arroyo in March, was abusing her authority and disregarding protocol when disseminating information. A PRIMER: DESIGN CENTER

The Product Development and Design Center of the Philippines (Design Center) is a technical agency of the
DEPARTMENT OF TRADE AND INDUSTRY. The Design Center is mandated to promote design as a tool for improving the quality and competitiveness of the Philippines products by servicing the design needs and requirements of manufacturers and exporters.

PROGRAMS

  • Product Design and Development. Design, development or improvement of products responsive to market needs and requirements and manufacturer’s production capabilities.
  • Design Research. Acquisition and dissemination of relevant design and market information and conduct of applied research to support product development activities of both designer and industry.
  • Design Promotion. Increase awareness and appreciation of design and its use through exhibitions, seminars, dialogues, and publications.

SERVICES

  • Product Design. Design of a new product, product adaptation, product diversification or expansion of existing product or product line.
  • Design Consultation. Advice on design directions, product evaluation.
  • Technology Consultation. Advice on production techniques related to product development.
  • Technical Information. Availability of technical information such as procedures on dyeing and finishing.
  • Library Services. Access to local and foreign publications on design and related topics.
  • Product Development Seminar. Conduct of seminars to increase design awareness and appreciation. Technology Updating Workshops are also offered.
