Toilet Paper Roll Art

Nice little art craft from an unlikely source of material, toilet paper roll. At the right angles and lighting, you’ll these little intriguing scenes. The whole enchilada here.

The next time you throw away the paper roll, you may want to give it to kids and have them something fun to do. That’s if, if they are done with their facebook accounts, hitting the malls, nintendo lite, PSP, PS3, surfing, texting, etc. Good luck.

Ondoy Flood Map Puzzle

ondoy flood map puzzle

Here’s one game/puzzle that is fun and informative.

Cool people from University of the Philippines Diliman National Institute of Geological Sciences (NIGS) in tandem with IBM volunteers did this online map puzzle. They used Google’s free map app + another free open source app called Jigsaw Puzzle + FEMA approved Flo2D software + information from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau Flood Susceptibility Map + surveys of flood level as given by affected Filipinos.

To me, the interactivity of the puzzle is just for the viral purpose, to put in fun, to spread the disaster history.

The more important thing about this project is the data available to the public is pretty darn useful. People can actually look at these maps and base real estate values (it works both ways though, some of the property owners located on the red areas may not be appreciative of these maps). Urban planners can use these maps too. With regards to the safety, people will have an idea what happened in the past and know where to be in case an Ondoy-ish storm is coming. LGU’s too, they can view this map and study how they can save lives and prepare routes and evacuation efforts.

We all can learn something from this online tool.

As of this posting, mapped and puzzled areas are UP campus, Quezon City, Santa Maria, Marikina City, Meycauayan, Valenzuela City.  The estimated/researched depth of the flood are indicated (color coded) on the map. The puzzle here.

Across the Philippines, they have more flood hazards map. Again,  the “inundation maps were simulated using rainfall delivered by tropical storm Ondoy on 26 September 2009 over 3 arc second topography from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission. Please click here for other areas (without the puzzle).

Stakeholder Assess Laguna Bamboo Industry, Draft Action Plan

In a workshop initiated by the Laguna Provincial Office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), the local governments of Siniloan, Nagcarlan, Lumban, Rizal, Famy, Magdalena, Calauan, and entrepreneurs, representatives of national government agencies and experts met to assess the province’s bamboo industry.

Marilou Quinco-Toledo, DTI Calabarzon Regional Director, provided background information and motivated participants to actively share their part in the development of the bamboo industry as it is hoped to significantly contribute to the economy by providing livelihood and employment to many sectors including local governments.

The province of Laguna is identified by the DTI to be the pilot area in Calabarzon for the bamboo development project.

The Philippine Bamboo Industry Development Council (PBIDC), as discussed by DTI Central Luzon regional director Blesila Blantayona, is created under Executive Order No. 879 which provides to promote the bamboo industry development project and direct the use of bamboo for at least 25 percent of the desk and other furniture requirements of public elementary and secondary schools. PBIDC is also mandated to promote the use of bamboo in furniture, fixtures and other construction requirements of government facilities.

Need for massive planting

Currently, there are only 40,000 hectares of land planted with bamboo in the country out of the estimated 200,000 hectares of bamboo plantation required to meet local demand.

“The industry is in the very scarce level of supply thus there is need for massive planting of bamboo, and even public lands are eyed to be tapped for planting”, added Director Lantayona of DTI Central Luzon.

The DENR on its part is tasked to reforest at least 500,000 hectares with bamboo which is the Philippines’ commitment of contribution to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) commitment of 20 million hectares of new forest by 2020.

The bamboo, with its myriads of uses, is in high demand yet supply is very low.

“Farmers and entrepreneurs must be shown and encouraged that bamboo and other bamboo-based products are selling and making money, thus they would be motivated to produce bamboo. Today’s cost of bamboo is very high; it’s a seller’s market”, said Myrna Bituin of Betis Crafts, as she emphasized the bamboo supply and replenishment concept.

“Under EO 879, the Department of Education (DepEd) will procure the equivalent of at least 25 percent of the annual school desks and armchairs requirements of all public elementary and secondary schools nationwide which are made of bamboo.

“The bamboo industry already has its demand waiting to be served, referring to the DepEd, an institutional market procuring bamboo-made desks and armchairs equivalent to 25% of the amount total desk requirements which is in several millions of pesos annually”, declared Director Lantayona.

Frank Bonoan, executive director of the Cottage Industrial Technology Center of the DTI, showed prototypes of desks and archairs and elaborated on the advantages of engineered bamboo ? or the’e-bamboo’ – in furniture-making and as basic construction components such as planks, pillars and floor tiles/parquet.

“Therefore, aside from the DepEd, the Department of Public Works and Highways would be another big institutional market requiring’engineered bamboo’ for the construction of public schools and other government facilities”, added Director Bonoan.

Business development model

The bamboo development framework has three components: propagation, business development and disaster risk management/mitigation.

Propagation involves the production of planting materials, nurseries and growing plantations which could be a big business opportunity.

Business development entails the establishment of nodes and hubs in which nodes will be the initial processors of bamboo into slats and hubs as production or manufacturing centers in which bamboo materials are made into its intended final product.

Bamboo on disaster risk mitigation

As a center of economic and industrial development, Calabarzon’s environment is prone to deterioration and degradation.

“There is now heavy sedimentation in Laguna de Bay due to erosion”, stressed Jose CariƱo of the Laguna Lake Development Authority when he spoke of the need to reforest the 3,600-sq. km watershed around the Laguna Lake with bamboo.

“In China, bamboo proved effective in protecting watersheds, riverbanks and hill slopes against soil erosion. Moreover, a hectare of bamboo plantation, if properly managed, will sequester 12 tons of carbon monoxide in a year”, added CariƱo.

Prompted by the his experience during typhoon Ondoy, Mayor Aurelio of the municipality of Rizal made said that there is an immediate need to reforest the highland municipality with bamboo. The flooding of the lowland municipalities was due to the lack of forest cover in the highlands that were supposed to arrest the flooding.

“As an incentive, we will give out quantities of rice for every bamboo planted; on the other hand, we immediately need the right quantity of bamboo seedlings for our reforestation project”, declared Mayor Aurelio.

CariƱo also cited bamboo for landscaping as showcased in posh Nuvali and Eton City, both high-end residential, business and commercial communities in Laguna.

Advocacy

The PBIF advocates on cooperation and working together of stakeholders for the advancement of the bamboo industry. It is also grants training on bamboo culture and production and echoes the utilization of bamboo as a sustainable environmental protection.

“The Chinese bamboo industry is far way advanced such that they have already found success in using bamboo into garments, towels, soap and cosmetics”, said Romualdo Sta. Ana, president of the Philippine Bamboo Industry Foundation (PBIF).

Dr. Celso Lantican of the Bamboo Network of the Philippines (BambooPhil) – an organization composed of Filipino bamboo scientists, advocates and entrepreneurs – visions a strong and cohesive network working actively for livelihood generation, environmental protection and industrial development using bamboo.

He introduced bamboo carpentry in support of the bamboo industry and as a craft for livelihood as well.

Action plan

At the latter part, DTI Laguna provincial director Susan Palo led the workshop to draft action plans and roles of the respective stakeholders.

It was decided that an assessment and survey of existing plantations and supply of bamboo be made throughout the province including in adjacent areas then identify processing nodes and manufacturing hubs.

Among those identified as hubs are the ABS-CBN Bayan Foundation – Bayan ni Juan resettlement center in Calauan, Laguna; and an existing yet unoperational bamboo processing facility also in Calauan.

SANYO Solar Modules Provide Renewable Power To Select Ikea Stores In Canada

ikea solar

SANYO Canada Inc. (SANYO) announced today that IKEA Canada has chosen SANYO HIT® technology to generate renewable energy using the roofs of three IKEA stores in the Greater Toronto Area. The project will support the use of industry-leading conversion efficiency SANYO HIT® Power 210A solar PV modules. The SANYO rooftop PV systems at IKEA stores in Etobicoke, North York and Vaughan together will have a capacity of 750kW, which is the approximate equivalent of what is needed to power 100 average Ontario homes. IKEA Canada will be the first retailer to exclusively own, install and operate what is expected to be the largest rooftop solar panel networks in Ontario under the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program. The systems, installed by AMP Solar Group, will be completed and fully operational by the end of December 2010.

IKEA Canada launched this solar initiative at its Etobicoke store on October 7, 2010 in a ceremony attended by the Honourable Brad Duguid, Ontario Minister of Energy; and the Honourable Laurel Broten, Minister of Children and Youth Services and Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues and MPP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore.

Other project participants included the Ontario Power Authority and two major local distribution companies, Toronto Hydro and PowerStream.

“IKEA Canada is pleased to partner with SANYO for the installation of three solar networks,” says Natalia Hahn, Sustainability Manager for IKEA Canada. “SANYO’s commitment to sustainability and their development of high efficiency solar panels has been an integral part of this renewable energy program at IKEA Canada.”

IKEA’s vision of helping to create a world where people “take better care of the environment, the Earth’s resources, and each other” has found a perfect fit with SANYO’s mission “to be an indispensable element in the lives of people all over the world by delivering unique and total sustainable solutions that enhance all lifestyles and industries.”

“We are proud to have this opportunity to be part of the solution that provides clean, renewable power using SANYO HIT® PV modules,” said Koshi Terakawa, President of SANYO Canada Inc.

“For projects of this nature, we understand the importance of utilizing high-performance PV modules with proven quality and reliability from an industry leader to maximize the energy harvest,” added KC Chang, SANYO Canada’s General Manager of Solar Systems. “This is especially true for systems designed to leverage the Feed-in Tariff program in Ontario for 20 years.”

SANYO will continue to be active in communities served by IKEA and its partners to help to ensure a sustainable planet for future generations.

Earring That Rock

Cement Pearls Earrings

These cement earrings are modeled on classic pearl studs. Each concrete sphere is cast by hand and set onto a sterling silver post. With wear, the colour of the earrings will deepen as the concrete is exposed to the air and the oils from your skin. via

Ok now, it’s time to say, “why didn’t I think of that?”

This is listed at 35$ and it’s not that badly priced, considering that buyer will pay for the original idea, novelty and top quality finish.

But I bet this is DIY-doable project you can try. Just knockout a cheaper skin friendly pair of earrings and grab a high quality cement. Try it.

Karlos Lleva loves toys so much he cannot bear seeing them thrown away. With boundless creativity and using polymer clay, he recycles their broken parts and turns them into unique accessories. With an initial capital of P2,000, Karlos, whose nickname is Kloi, started Kloi’s n Klay’s after discovering that he could turn his hobby into a business venture. But more than being a source of income, Kloi got into the business out of his personal love for crafting things. “As a kid, I’ve always been fascinated with making clay pots but I didn’t know then how it works,” Kloi says. “I used my skills in making props to make my designs stand out,” shares Kloi, who used to volunteer to make stage props in church for the yearly Senakulo. Manhattan Green Solutions Releases "Pay From Saving Plan"

Manhattan Green Solutions is now promoting Oxygenics Showerheads through its Pay From Savings plan, a promotional concept for the Philippines where hotels, resorts, hospitals, home development, and others, do not need to pay outright cash for purchasing the showerheads, but instead, pay a 20% downpayment and pay the rest in 12 easy payments. This would mean that the cost off the downpayment and the monthly payment will be offset from savings, which would mean a slight shift on operational cost from a one time capital expense, to an offset of savings to investment in monthly operating expense. After the 1st year, the owner gets to completely enjoy the savings accordingly.

The promotion is valid for all units of Oxygenics and Efergy units.

Only Orders worth Php 250,000 above will be valid. This is best suited for small and medium, and large businesses.

Manhattan Green Solutions also has a waterless urinal system that does not require replacement of the urinal, which also means no more initial investment cost, and an easy offset on operational cost.

Invariably, Manhattan Green Solutions has brought in Water Savings, and Energy Savings to the Philippines, both private and government institutions, at the most affordable offer yet.

Upside Down House, Again

"datgilab"

Upside homes are getting more common each day but I never get tired of looking (and posting) these houses, imagining how the interiors would look, if it really causes dizziness, etc. This one I think is in Korea. The hanging car is ridiculous! via

Want more? Check the flipped homes here. And check this one, even the furniture and fixtures go with the flow, all upside down.

Book: Builders Of Bridges, The Rudy Cuenca Story

Builder of Bridges, The Rudy Cuenca Story

An interesting book that I’ll buy right about now.

With Marcos-era construction and with Marcos rule bits itself, I’ll buy this book. I am fascinated with events and people surrounding the Martial Law and it’s interesting how contracting and building went back then. Titled “Builder of Bridges, the Rudy Cuenca Story”,  is the story about the rise and fall from grace of Cuenca’s Construction and Development Corporation of the Philippines (CDCP). It also reveals insider’s account of the tensions and corruption inside Marcos circle. I gotta have this!

It is by Anvil Publishing and authored by By Jose Dalisay Jr. and Antonette Reyes.

Here’s a note from the author Butch Dalisay that makes me wanna own this locally authored and published book…

As my older readers will remember, Rudy Cuenca was the Marcos-era contractor responsible for some of the biggest construction projects of that time. As the back of the book notes, “Though he never finished college, he built the San Juanico Bridge and the North and South Expressways, undertook the massive Manila Bay reclamation project, initiated the export of Filipino labor to the Middle East, and ran the Sheraton, the Pines Hotel, and the Taal Vista Lodge, among many other enterprises. He built the Construction Development Corporation of the Philippines (CDCP) into the country’s largest construction conglomerate of its time. And yet many Filipinos remember him today only as a ‘Marcos crony,’ a tag he will not deny.

“At his heart, however, Rodolfo “Rudy” Cuenca was a builder of bridges—and a witness to some of the most interesting and significant events of 20th-century Philippines. ‘This book was conceived,’ he says, ‘in the hope that a new generation of Filipinos would look back to my life and times and realize — without condoning whatever wrongs and evils may have happened then — that some lasting good emerged out of that period that we can still enjoy and be proud of.’”

This project was particularly interesting for me as a writer, because my initial impulse when I was approached to do it was to say no. I was a martial-law prisoner and had not forgotten the horrifying excesses of that period, and I told Rudy so.

On the other hand, here was an opportunity for a Marcos insider to share his privileged insights into the day-today workings of that regime, the full history of which has yet to be written by far more qualified authors than me. So I let Rudy Cuenca speak for himself — it’s a truly remarkable life, quite apart from Marcos — for interpellation by the scholars and critics. via

I ordered it online thru Anvil site. Awaiting their reply. It turns out, order is manually sent. “Our Order processing department will reply within 24 hours with a quotation indicating the prices of the books you ordered and the freight and handling charges.” Payment is via money order or CC.  By the way, read this piece by Amando Doronilla with excerpts from the “Builder of Bridges” book.
