Cassette Tape Art - Portraiture

We used to play with defective music cassette tape when we were young. We’d get the tape and use it our spider-silk-web that’s supposed to catch the enemies. And you know how weak this tape is. It only requires exactly 0.0000024 lbs of pull-force before it reaches its snapping point. So it’s useless when used for such.

It turns out, there is a better use for old tapes. I found the after-service purpose of cassette tapes (and VHS tapes, betamax tapes, film reels, etc.), it has something to do with the arts. That is, make black & white artistic portraits of some pop culture icons using this, using only this.

“In this series I showcase a number of portraits of musicians made out of recycled cassette tape with original cassette. Also included are portraits made from old film and reels. The idea comes from a philosopher’s (Ryle) description of how your spirit lives in your body. I imagine we are all, like cassettes, thoughts wrapped up in awkward packaging.”

Ben Turnbull's Deadly Carvings on Desks

First off, let me ‘fire’ away by saying, his surname matches his choice of subject for this series of woodworks… some little badaz toy weapons.

Ben Turnbull’s work is mainly themed on American’s dominance and it’s political clout towards the entire world (the Philippines included of course).

“Ben Turnbull is fascinated by the global dominance of American culture, and his works unsettling effects result from re-presenting the toys of our innocent youth in symbolic forms that reveal the shocking truths about war, death and guns in the world’s most powerful country.”

The carvings were done on real desks. In fact, if you’ll look closely, on the wood, you’ll see an engraved Pythagorean Theorem on the wood desk. One kid might have written that as his “reminder” just before taking a trigonometry exam. I’m just kidding.

12 FACTS…

1. this is a gift i made afternoon of saturday, july 25 2009
2. the canvass i bought from national bookstore is P160 per framed canvass
3. coz i don’t do this stuff as often as i would want to, my first try was a mess, sayang ang P160.00
4. for the successful version (or as I would like to call it, the pasang-awa one)
5. i spent 3.5 hours, for the unsuccessful version, i spent 2 hours
6. the toughest part to make, the lips part
7. this is not the best paint job in the world but i’m sure this is better than a “mango” blouse
8. P1000 or so saved just by doing this gift
9. the photo was shot in boracay using fuji point & shoot camera
10. at the office, doing this thing, i had tabo & timba by my side to wash the paint brushes
11. the subject in the painting, that’s her expert-look photographer shooting position
12. because the recipient loves the painting so much, she told me, the P50,000 i owe her, I can forget all about it. =P

A Nail’s Art

Mother of mercy! Life is unfair. Some guys are just born gifted. Real artists. They see and envision things we ordinary mortals can’t see.

Check the work of this guy, Vlad. Using ordinary crooked, bent, rusting nails and some other home stuff, and he has got one pure artistic set of photos of nails suggesting life situations, feelings, failures, etc. These nails freaking breathe.

I got nails and screws and stuff and camera…. Inspired by this, we’re gonna be making our own version of this. I hope its fine by you comrade Vlad.

Another book inside Leoque. A mega square book, title is “Nudes.” And there’s no denying the title. Over 250 pages of tasteful nakedness & nudity of different mediums and art forms (sculpture and painting). These books we got serve triple-purpose. First we leoque look at these books and somehow make push us and inspire us to be more creative and imaginative with both design and photography. And second use is, we use the books as props when shooting storage furniture, side tables, coffee table, bookshelves, etc. Third, we collect/buy these art & trade books to beef up our soon-to-be-made home or office library.
