International Product Design Contest - Shaped Wood From Its Most Attractive Side

Fritz Becker KG is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2011. On this occasion, the company, which is among the world’s leading shaped wood manufacturers, is now announcing an International Product Design Contest: The Becker Contest 2011. With the well-endowed prize, the specialist, based in Eastern Westphalia, intends to promote promising, budding designers.

Already for the second time in the company’s history, Becker is searching for young talents, who prove themselves with aesthetic and functional designs. More than 400 designers from all over the world participated in the first competition for the 50th anniversary. Becker intends to follow up on this success and is searching for innovative designs using shaped wood, but which can also be combined with other materials. In addition to furniture, work from various fields of application is welcome. With the contest, the shaped wood manufacturer is addressing students of design educational institutions worldwide, as well as budding designers with up to two years professional experience.

A jury comprised of seven people will choose ten winners in February 2011, who will share the prize money totalling EUR 18,000. The award ceremony will take place on 24th May 2011 on the evening before the Interzum – the world’s largest leading trade fair for suppliers to the furniture industry – in Cologne. A special plus: During the entire trade fair, Fritz Becker KG will exhibit all of the prize winners’ prototypes on its stand.

International, top-class jury
In addition to Dr. Ralf Becker, Managing Director of Fritz Becker KG, the jury will include two well-known furniture producers: Dr. Marc Brunner, Managing Partner of Brunner GmbH, one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of office and utility furniture. And Willem van Ast, Director of Arco Contemporary Furniture (Netherlands), which specialises in contemporary wooden furniture.

Prof. Dieter Zimmer represents the world of science. The emeritus professor for industrial design teaches at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Art and Design in Kiel and is a guest professor at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. Furthermore, a person who participated in the contest 25 years ago is strengthening the jury. Alfredo Häberli is now active in Zurich as an internationally recognised designer in product and furniture design.

Becker also searched for people outside of the industry, who nevertheless have a sense of excellent design. The choice fell on Barbara Friedrich and Dr. Sabine Thu?mmler. Friedrich is Chief Editor at “Architektur & Wohnen” and “Country” magazines. Thu?mmler manages the Museum of Decorative Arts of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.
